- HOW TO UPDATE NORTON ANTIVIRUS WITH UPDATEME.EXE
-
- This document covers the procedures for updating Norton AntiVirus 3.0 (NAV)
- and Norton AntiVirus Network Manager (NAVNET) with UPDATEME.EXE. These
- procedures are appropriate for the following situations:
-
- Standalone computer (not networked)
- * Virus-free
- * Virus-infected
-
- Server running NAVNET, updating from a workstation
-
- Find the section appropriate for your situation, then follow its steps to
- perform the update.
-
- **************************************************************************
- Virus-Free Standalone Computer
- **************************************************************************
- Use the steps in this section if you are updating NAV on a virus-free
- standalone computer.
-
- 1 Exit Windows (if you use Windows).
- 2 Go to the DOS prompt.
- 3 Enter C:.
- 4 Enter CD\
- 5 Enter MD\TEMPNAV to create a new, temporary directory.
- 6 Enter CD\TEMPNAV.
- 7 Enter COPY <X>:\<PATH>\UPDATEME.EXE C:\TEMPNAV. (This copies UPDATEME.EXE
- to the TEMPNAV directory.) Replace <X> with the drive letter where
- UPDATEME.EXE resides. Replace <PATH> with the path to UPDATEME.EXE.
- For example, COPY C:\MODEM\DOWNLOAD\UPDATEME.EXE C:\TEMPNAV.
- 8 Enter UPDATEME. (This expands UPDATEME.EXE into several files, one of
- which is UPDATE.EXE.)
- 9 Enter UPDATE. (This runs the UPDATE.EXE, which creates the installation
- files.)
- * If a prompt appears for the location of NAV, enter the drive
- letter and directory path. For example, C:\NAV.
- * If NAV is not installed on your computer, insert either disk
- of your original NAV disk set into the A: drive. Enter A:.
- A prompt appears for the directory into which the installation files
- are to go. Do not enter the directory in which NAV resides. The
- following two sections have steps for either saving the installation
- files on the hard disk or on floppy disks.
- 10 Go to either "To Save the Update Installation Files on the Hard Disk"
- or "To Save the Update Installation Files on Floppy Disks"
- following this section.
-
- **************************************************************************
- To Save the Update Installation Files on the Hard Disk
- **************************************************************************
- 1 Enter C:\TEMPINST at the prompt. The update now creates the TEMPINST
- directory, then puts the installation files into it. One of these
- installation files is INSTALL.EXE. This process takes several
- minutes.
- 2 Enter CD\TEMPINST.
- 3 Enter INSTALL. This entry runs the update installation application.
- 4 Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
-
- **************************************************************************
- To Save the Update Installation Files on Floppy Disks
- **************************************************************************
- 1 Get the number of formatted 1.44 Mb floppy disks for your situation.
- * NAV 3.0: four disks
- * NAVNET: four disks
- 2 Insert the first disk into the floppy drive. (This disk will contain
- INSTALL.EXE.)
- 3 Enter A: at the prompt. It takes several minutes to create each
- installation disk.
- 4 Remove the disk, then insert the next one when prompted.
- 5 Number each disk (1, 2, 3, 4) after it is created.
- 6 Slide the plastic write-protect tab on each installation disk until
- the small, square hole is completely open. (This protects the
- disks from infection.)
- 7 Insert Disk 1 (that you created in Step 1) into the A: drive.
- 8 Enter A:\INSTALL. (This runs the update installation application.)
- 9 Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update installation.
-
- **************************************************************************
- Virus-Infected Standalone Computer
- **************************************************************************
- WARNING: Do not run UPDATEME.EXE until you have restarted your computer
- as shown in the following steps. If you run UPDATEME.EXE without the restart,
- the update files could be infected. Symantec Technical Support recommends
- reading this procedure before performing the steps.
-
- 1 Download UPDATEME.EXE onto your virus-infected standalone computer.
- 2 Turn the infected computer off.
- 3 Insert your original, write-protected DOS Disk 1 into the A: drive.
- * If you are using a different boot disk, slide its write-protect
- tab until it is completely open. Insert this disk into the A:
- drive.
- 4 Turn the infected computer on. The A:> prompt should appear.
- * If, instead of the A:> prompt, the DOS installation application
- appears, press F3. Press F3 again to exit the DOS installation
- application. The A:> prompt should now appear.
- 5 Enter C:.
- 6 Enter MD\TEMPNAV to create a new, temporary directory.
- 7 Enter CD\TEMPNAV.
- 8 Enter COPY <X>:\<PATH>\UPDATEME.EXE C:\TEMPNAV.
- 9 Enter UPDATEME. (This expands UPDATEME.EXE into several files, one of which
- is UPDATE.EXE.)
- 10 Enter UPDATE. (This runs the UPDATE.EXE, which creates the installation
- files.)
- 11 Get three, formatted 1.44Mb floppy disks.
- 12 Insert the first disk into the floppy drive. (This disk will contain
- INSTALL.EXE.)
- 13 Enter A: at the prompt. It takes several minutes to create each
- installation disk.
- 14 Remove the disk, then insert the next one when prompted.
- 15 Number each disk (1, 2, 3, 4) after it is created.
- 16 Slide the plastic write-protect tab on each installation disk until the
- small, square hole is completely open. This protects the disks
- from infection.
- 17 Insert Disk 2 (of the set you just created) into the A: drive.
- 18 Enter A:\NAV C: /REPAIR. This should automatically clean the virus
- infection from your computer. For more information about removing
- viruses, See the Norton AntiVirus 3.0 for Windows/DOS User's Guide
- and Reference, Chapter 1.
- 19 Insert Disk 1 (of the set you just created) into the A: drive.
- 20 Enter A:\INSTALL. (This runs the update installation application.)
- 21 Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update installation.

- Updating NAVNET on a Server from a Workstation
- **************************************************************************
- Updating NAVNET on a server from a workstation (running UPDATE.EXE) causes
- a search of the PATH statement for a previous version of NAV. If UPDATE.EXE
- finds a standalone workstation version of NAV, update installation files for
- a standalone computer are created. If UPDATE.EXE finds NAVNET, update
- installation files for the Network Manager are created.
-
- To be sure UPDATE.EXE finds NAVNET, do one of the following before running
- the update:
- * Cancel the path on the workstation.
- * Change the path to point to only the NAVNET directory on the
- server.
- * Make the necessary files available for UPDATE.EXE to determine
- that it needs to create NAVNET update installation files.
-
- Otherwise, the workstation version may be accidentally installed on the
- server, which deletes the NAVNET network files.
-
- **************************************************************************
- Accidentally Deleted NAVNET from the Server by Installing NAV
- **************************************************************************
- If NAVNET was accidentally deleted from the server by installing the regular
- workstation version, reinstall NAVNET on the server, then complete the
- following procedure. The reinstall must be done because UPDATE.EXE will not
- recognize the compressed files on the original NAVNET installation disks
- when searching for a valid version to update.
-
- **************************************************************************
- NAVNET Update Procedure
- **************************************************************************
- Use the following steps if have an original version of NAVNET on the server
- and UPDATEME.EXE on a virus-free workstation. Do so from the workstation
- that has UPDATEME.EXE. This section also includes instructions for updating
- the definitions using the Intelligent Updater (MMNAVYY.EXE).
-
- 1 Download UPDATEME.EXE (if you have not already done so).
- 2 Make a directory called UPDATEME (for example, MD C:\UPDATEME).
- 3 Move UPDATEME.EXE into the UPDATEME directory.
- 4 Copy NAVNET.EXE and NAVNETW.EXE to the UPDATEME directory from the current
- server copy of NAVNET. (UPDATE.EXE needs these two files to create a
- NAVNET update installation file set.)
- 5 Enter UPDATEME.
- 6 Enter UPDATE.
- 7 Enter .\install.
- 8 Enter CD INSTALL.
- 9 Enter INSTALL.
- 10 Point to the network drive and directory.
- * If the directory does not exist, the NAVNET installation
- application creates it.
- 11 Run the definitions update using the Intelligent Updater (MMNAVYY.EXE).
- * For example, 09NAV96 F: will search the F: drive for all versions
- of NAV (both Network Manager and the NLM) and update them to the
- latest definitions (in this example, September).
- 12 Change to the new NAVNET directory.
- 13 Enter NAV . to force a rebuild of the necessary definition files and to
- prevent any possible data corruption.
-
- **************************************************************************
- NOTE: You must re-create your .NNS files after upgrading NAVNET. You cannot
- use your old .NNS files to create the new ones due to changes in the update.
- Be sure to back up the new _DEFAULT.NNS file prior to changing it.
